7 Safety Hazards Every Fabrication Shop Should Review This Month

Every company wants the same thing: to send employees home safely to their families at the end of each shift. But when production schedules get tight, safety standards can slip a little at a time.

​A missed inspection, a cluttered walkway, or a skipped reminder may not seem urgent in the moment, but small hazards can quickly lead to injuries, damaged equipment, and costly downtime.

June is National Safety Month, which makes it a practical opportunity to pause, look closely at your current procedures, and identify gaps before they become bigger problems.
​
Even shops with strong safety programs benefit from a regular reset. Whether you manage a large production facility or a small fabrication shop, these seven safety areas are worth reviewing now and revisiting often.

1. Air Quality

Welding fumes are one of the most significant long-term hazards in a metal fab environment.

Different base metals and filler materials produce different types of fumes, many of which contain fine particles and metals that you really don't want you or your staff to be inhaling on the regular. 

If your shop has recently expanded, added new welding stations, or changed processes since your ventilation system was installed, then it's probably time to figure out if your existing setup is still doing it's job. 
DIVE DEEPER INTO FUME CONTROL

​Air quality review should include:
  • Inspecting exhaust systems
  • Checking that portable fume extractors are still functioning
  • Based on manufacturer recommendations, setting a schedule for replacing any filters
  • Reviewing safety expectation with your crew, making sure they understand proper ventilation practices and PPE requirements

Cylinders should always be:
  • Stored upright
  • Secured with chains or straps
  • Protected from excessive heat and kept out of high traffic areas where they could be struck
  • Transported using a cylinder cart, never rolled, dragged, or slid (even if it's just a short distance!)
  • Topped with the valve protective cap when not in use

2. GAS SAFETY

​Compressed gas cylinders are found in nearly every fabrication facility, yet improper storage and handling remain common safety concerns.

And it's no joke, mishandling cylinders can endanger both people and equipment. Your staff must receive proper training in handling and storing​ gas.

Employees should regularly inspect the cylinders for damage or leaks, and take a close look at any regulators, hoses, and fittings, because even a small issue can be dangerous or, at a minimum, costly.

3. EQUIPMENT MAintenance 

Regular equipment maintenance is an easy way to protect your investment AND your people, and avoid downtime.

​Since welding equipment operates with high electrical currents, be sure to keep your work areas clean and dry. This reduces the chance of electric shock and keeps dust and debris out of your machines.

​Have your staff routinely inspect the equipment and use maintenance logs to track inspection dates, part replacements, and general performance notes.

PROACTIVE MAINTENANCE TIPS

Things to look out for:
  • Damaged leads, worn electrode holders, loose ground connections
  • Cracked insulation, damaged plugs or power cords
  • Inconsistent arc/ power fluctuations and bad weld quality
  • Weird noises, unusual vibration, burnt smells, smoke and overheating during normal use
  • Error codes or warning lights (These built-in diagnostics are there for a good reason, so don't ignore them like you ignore your check engine light)

Take time to inspect the shop for:
  • Flammable liquids stored near welding or cutting areas
  • Cardboard, paper, dust, or other combustible debris
  • Proper placement and regular inspection of fire extinguishers 
  • Damaged gas delivery systems, equipment or extension cords.

4. FIRE HAZARDS

We probably don't have to tell you that welding and cutting creates sparks, molten metal, and heat that can ignite combustible materials. 

Now we don't want to sound like your mom telling you to clean up your room, but unfortunately, good housekeeping really is one of the most effective fire prevention strategies.

Your shop might benefit from creating a hot work area; if that's not possible due to space constraints, you should have a designated fire watch.

5. Grinding Sparks and Abrasive Wheel Safety

​Grinding is part of nearly every fabrication process, but it tends to receive less attention than welding itself. Just like any other tool, double check that everything is functioning properly.

For PPE, wear a face shield and safety glasses, even when working with guarded grinders.

During your safety review, inspect:
  • Grinding wheel condition
  • Guard placement, tool cords, and mounting hardware
  • Grinding spark direction

Inspect commonly used items such as:
  • Welding helmets
  • Auto-darkening lenses
  • Gloves
  • FR jackets
  • Respirators
  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection
  • Steel-toe footwear

6. ​Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

PPE only works when it’s in good condition and being used correctly. 

Look for worn gloves, cracked helmet lenses, and damaged respirator seals. Replacing worn items before they fail is far less expensive than dealing with an injury.

PPE also only works when your staff actually use it. Providing equipment and cultivating a positive workplace safety culture go a long way toward PPE use.

7. Shop Organization AND Material HandlinG

Keeping aisles clear, storing materials properly, and organizing workstations are simple ways to avoid slips, trips, and falls.

Pennsylvania:
All welding courses offered in Pennsylvania are Johnson College Continuing Education programs delivered at Earlbeck’s York, PA facility under Johnson College’s licensure and academic oversight. Johnson College manages registration, tuition, refunds, and student records for Pennsylvania programs.

Maryland:
In Maryland, welding classes are offered to the public through Earlbeck’s instructional partnerships with Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). These programs are administered through the respective colleges, which oversee enrollment, academic standards, and student records.

Intermediate and Advanced welding classes offered through our college partnerships include certification testing as part of the course. Students must pass all required tests in accordance with AWS and ASME code standards to earn welder certification.
