We recently set up a custom waterjet table for one of our customers right here in Maryland, and it's been fantastic to see the impact this technology has on streamlining their operations. Understanding advanced cutting technologies like waterjets is crucial, so this post explores their impressive capabilities, benefits, and our top recommendations.
What are waterjets and how do they work?
Waterjets are cutting tools that use a high-velocity jet of water, sometimes mixed with abrasive particles, to cut a wide variety of materials. There are two main types of waterjets: pure waterjets, ideal for softer materials like rubber and foam, and abrasive waterjets, which can cut through harder materials such as metals and stone. These options offer a versatile cutting solution across many applications!

The principle behind a waterjet involves generating a high-pressure stream of water, which can reach pressures up to 60,000 psi. This stream is then focused through a very small nozzle to achieve precise cutting. In abrasive waterjets, an additional abrasive is mixed with the water, enhancing the cutting power. The combination of high-speed water and abrasive particles allows the jet to slice through materials cleanly and with great accuracy.
What are the applications & benefits of water jets?
Waterjet technology finds applications in a variety of industries due to its precision and versatility. In the aerospace sector, it's used for cutting and shaping components like titanium bodies and intricate engine parts. The automotive industry benefits from waterjet cutting for manufacturing interior panels and insulation with high accuracy. Additionally, waterjets are utilized in the art and design fields to create complex artworks in materials such as metal, glass, and stone. The construction industry also employs this technology for cutting materials like stone and tile for architectural designs, allowing for detailed and precise work.

The possibilities are endless, spanning across different sectors, because one of the key advantages of waterjet cutting is its ability to make precise cuts without damaging the material structure. Thanks to its cold cutting method, waterjets do not create any heat-affected zones! They can seamlessly cut through plastics, metals, composites, and even glass, regardless of its thickness, making them incredibly versatile for manufacturing a diverse range of products. Additionally, waterjet cutting is an environmentally friendly option; it produces no hazardous waste and reduces scrap material by allowing for very tight nesting of parts.

When compared to laser and plasma cutting, waterjets offer unique advantages. Unlike laser cutting, which can struggle with thicker or more reflective materials, waterjets can manage any material without risk of reflection or heat damage. Plasma cutting, while powerful, often results in heat-affected zones, which are a non-issue with waterjet cutting.

Pennsylvania:
All welding courses offered in Pennsylvania are Johnson College Continuing Education programs delivered at Earlbeck’s York, PA facility under Johnson College’s licensure and academic oversight. Johnson College manages registration, tuition, refunds, and student records for Pennsylvania programs.


Maryland:
In Maryland, welding classes are offered to the public through Earlbeck’s instructional partnerships with Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). These programs are administered through the respective colleges, which oversee enrollment, academic standards, and student records.

Intermediate and Advanced welding classes offered through our college partnerships include certification testing as part of the course. Students must pass all required tests in accordance with AWS and ASME code standards to earn welder certification.
