As the landscape of manufacturing continues to evolve, we are discovering that advanced technologies like collaborative robots are no longer just the domain of large industrial outfits. With the advent of more accessible, flexible, and cost-effective solutions, even small-scale operations can harness the power of robotics to enhance their productivity and quality!

Collaborative robots, or cobots, are designed to work alongside humans in a shared workspace without the need for traditional safety barriers. This actually makes them ideal for smaller shops where space and versatility are at a premium. 

As with implementing anything new in your shop or business, there are always things to consider before taking the plunge. Since we are in the welding business, this article will mostly focus on cobot welding, but many of these considerations can be applied to other robotic tasks. So let’s talk about the benefits, considerations, and challenges- and how to navigate them!

BENEFITS: Robotic systems bring a level of precision and reliability that boosts both productivity and the quality of the final product. This high quality reduces the need for rework and associated costs, directly saving time and money. Additionally, these systems cut down on waste and reduce labor needs- thanks to precise control over the welding metal, each pass uses the correct amount of material, which avoids overwelding and requires less supervision 

For larger operations with deeper pockets, the benefits of automation are clear, but smaller outfits also stand to gain significantly. They can achieve greater operational flexibility and leverage automation to foster a collaborative work environment. This often leads to increased staff engagement and innovation. By automating repetitive tasks, these systems free up skilled workers to focus on more complex tasks, adding value to the manufacturing process.

CONSIDERATIONS: When thinking about integrating robotic welding, shops should start by assessing their specific pain points. What problem are you hoping to improve or solve with automation? Whether it's ramping up production speed, enhancing the quality of welds, or streamlining operator training, identifying these goals early can help you get the most out of your cobot. 

The initial investment in this tech can be substantial, but the long-term savings are even greater. By increasing efficiency and reducing waste, these systems pay for themselves over time. Shops can achieve a lower total cost of ownership due to decreased needs for repairs and downtime. ​
CHALLENGES: Integrating robotic technology into a small shop can come with challenges- think workflow changes, part design, space constraints, and training hurdles- so let's talk about what you can do to make sure your implementation is successful.

  • Start Simple: Begin with automating simple, repeatable parts to build confidence and experience before moving on to more complex tasks.  For shops working with large volumes of a single part, or similar parts, grouping them can boost efficiency and minimize downtime, making the investment more worthwhile.
  • Employee Training and Buy-in: It's crucial to train employees thoroughly and ensure they are on board with the new technology. This helps in smoothing the transition and leveraging the system’s full potential. Ongoing education can address updates in system capabilities and maintenance needs to prevent operational hiccups.
  • Assess Part Suitability: Evaluate whether the parts are suitable for automation. This involves considering the design and variability of the parts- not all components may be ideal for robotic welding, but some will be the perfect fit. 
  • Cost and ROI: Understand the costs involved and the expected ROI. These estimates should factor in the labor rate of each shop and how much time welding automation might save. Estimates should also consider the ratio of machine uptime to downtime for part and fixture changeover. While some shops may produce enough of a single part to justify a robotic system, other shops may want to consider grouping similar parts to to get the needed volume for ROI purposes, improving efficiency and save on downtime for fixture changeover. 
  • Space and Setup: The space you have available may need to be expanded or reconfigured to make room for new equipment. This can add to the upfront cost but is essential for ensuring the new system operates efficiently and safely.

Pennsylvania:
All welding courses offered in Pennsylvania are Johnson College Continuing Education programs delivered at Earlbeck’s York, PA facility under Johnson College’s licensure and academic oversight. Johnson College manages registration, tuition, refunds, and student records for Pennsylvania programs.


Maryland:
In Maryland, welding classes are offered to the public through Earlbeck’s instructional partnerships with Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) and Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). These programs are administered through the respective colleges, which oversee enrollment, academic standards, and student records.

Intermediate and Advanced welding classes offered through our college partnerships include certification testing as part of the course. Students must pass all required tests in accordance with AWS and ASME code standards to earn welder certification.
