AWS Scholarships Application Open!

12/1/2025

Picture
Scholarships can be an indispensable resource for both welders just getting started and those looking to further their careers. Since 1993, AWS has lent a helping hand to over 18,000 aspiring welders, and the next one could be you!

A scholarship from the AWS Foundation allows students to focus on their education and training, rather than worrying about how they'll afford it. There are a few different scholarship options from AWS, applying to trade schools and certificate programs (like Earlbeck provides through our college partnerships), community colleges, and four-year universities, so let's go over what’s available and what steps you need to take to apply today!

Picture

SECTION & DISTRICT NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS

Average Award: $1,000-$3,000+
Eligibility criteria varies
 depending on the scholarship

DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIPS

Average Award: $1,000+
Each AWS district has $15,000 to allocate for post-secondary welding educational or training programs

Welder Training scholarships

Average Award: $1,000
For certificate programs
(trade school, community college, training facility)

National Scholarships

Average Award: $2,500-$10,000+
For Bachelor/ Associates Degrees
(Due to the nature of our program, these funds cannot be used at Earlbeck Technical Center)
Picture
AWS makes applying for all of these scholarships easy with a single application! To apply for these scholarships before the March 1st, 2026 deadline, please visit the AWS website.

You'll begin by creating an academic profile and providing information about your school, personal goals, and objectives. Based on this information and your geographic location, AWS will show you what you are eligible to apply for. Depending on the specific scholarship, you may be prompted to respond to essay questions covering topics such as personal statements, relevant work experience, and career goals. They may also ask for letters of recommendation, transcripts, or a breakdown of your educational costs.

After you complete the profile and add in any additional requirements they request, you've applied! It's a simple process with big rewards that will help you on your journey to where you need to be as a welder!

Pro Tip: For certain scholarships, AWS requires that applicants be AWS members, and often selection committees prioritize AWS members. The good news is that if you're not a member, it's easy to become one and if you're a student then your membership is FREE!
If you are currently enrolled, or will soon enroll, in a welding program or a related field,
then consider applying for one of these scholarships. An AWS scholarship can be the extra
push that helps you fulfill your goals! Most of these scholarship funds can be used towards classes offered through our college partnerships or at our Technical Centers in MD & PA .

MD Manufacturing 4.0 Grant Program

7/9/2025

Picture

The Maryland Department of Commerce’s Manufacturing 4.0 Grant applications open on August 1st, 2025! If you are a small to mid-sized manufacturing company that was planning on integrating advanced technologies into your workflow, then this grant was made for you!

The Maryland 4.0 Manufacturing Grant program is designed to empower Maryland's local manufacturing businesses by financially supporting their adoption of cutting-edge industrial tech and robotics. It's all about bringing the future of manufacturing into today's factories, making them more innovative and more efficient!
Picture
Your award amount is dependent on the size of your company- grants will cover 75% of project costs for small manufacturers and 50% of project costs for mid-sized manufacturers, with grants ranging from $25,000 up to $500,000. From robotics to new software that connects and streamlines your operations, this grant is here to help your business afford these big steps forward!

This program is tailored towards projects that demonstrate a clear tie to Industry 4.0 technologies- so think sensors and automation that will improve your manufacturing process, track preventative maintenance, productivity levels, machine uptime/downtime and more!

If you're a metal fabricator who is not sure where to start, let us help! Below are some ideas for how you can use
these funds to optimize your operations.
Picture
Employee Training
Don't forget that this grant will also cover employee training and consultative services around 4.0 technologies. So, the costs that always come with using new systems, technologies, or equipment is covered- setting your team up for success!

Automation for Streamlined Tasks and Increased Efficiency
Automation plays a pivotal role in reducing human error, improving precision, and accelerating production cycles. Welding robotic systems or cobots can handle repetitive or labor-intensive tasks with greater speed and accuracy, allowing skilled operators to focus on more complex responsibilities. Additionally, automated cutting tables can greatly assist in consistent component production and productivity.
Connected Welding or Plasma Cutting Machines for Real-Time Monitoring
Connected machines enable seamless communication and collaboration across the shop floor. Through the Internet of Things (IoT), sensors embedded in machines collect valuable real-time data on equipment performance, consumable consumption, and maintenance needs. This data can be analyzed to identify bottlenecks, optimize production schedules, and ensure proactive maintenance, minimizing downtime and maximizing efficiency.

Looking for more inspiration?
To be eligible for the Maryland 4.0 Manufacturing Grant, your business needs to be already operating and established for a minimum of 2 years, and currently be in good standing with the State of Maryland. Your business must also employ between 3 and 250 full-time workers and fall under the NAICS two-digit codes of 31, 32, or 33; indicating a manufacturing focus. In addition, compliance with both federal and Maryland-specific Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations is also required.

But most importantly, applicants need to show that they have not only the capability to implement the proposed project successfully, but also a strong commitment or strategic approach to adopting Industry 4.0 tech! Having a compelling application in this competitive grant is definitely important, companies should consult vendors for quotes and specs to make the application package more robust. Since the state is unlikely to give multiple awards to a single company, applicants should put their best foot forward and submit their strongest application. These applications need to tell a story- think of how new technology can lead to increased sales, new hires and a new product line and elaborate on that.

And lastly, the ability to provide matching funds is crucial to show that your business has the financial readiness for the proposed upgrades!
